19. Mrs. Belmont's Bedroom (The Madame's Room) or Salon-Boudoir
This magnificent eighteenth century paneling was purchased in France by Hunt and Hunt especially for Alva. The Tinneys added an 18th century chandelier, originally lit with candles, which has a gold-leafed wrought iron frame and variety of rare hand-cut French crystal bells and Czechoslovakian prisms and beads.
There are two sets of rococo double doors on the north wall, but only one can be opened to the Circular Stair Hall. French doors and windows overlook the east lawn, the center courtyard, and the loggia.
A "secret door", cut into the paneling of the south wall, leads down six steps to Mrs. Belmont?s sunken bathroom. The original marble and porcelain fixtures remain and are like those in the Master Bathroom. Marble slabs with drains below each fixture prevented water damage in case of overflow or leak. There was no shower.
